The XM-148 Grenade Launcher

The XM-148 was an experimental 40 mm grenade launcher developed in the 1960s for the United States Air Force. It was designed to be a more complex firing mechanism than the standard M79. Instead of being a single barrel system, the XM-148 broke down into a quadrant sight, a receiver group, and a pistol grip. These parts were very small, so the weapon was difficult to disassemble. Eventually, the design was deemed unsuitable for field use.

The XM-148 was developed by Colt Firearms. It was based on the Colt CGL-4. In January 1966, 10,500 of these CGL-4s were ordered. They were intended to replace the stand-alone M79 grenade launcher. By May 1967, the XM148 was deemed unsuitable for use in the field. However, some security police units were still using the XM148 in the 1990s.

The XM-148 was not destroyed in the 1990s, but it was retired and used by the U.S. Air Force Security Forces for many years. The XM-148 was also used by US Special Forces. Eventually, the XM-148 was replaced by the AAI Corporation"s M203.

Until the early 1990s, the XM-148 was used as a training weapon for the United States Air Force and United States Army Security Forces. However, the XM-148 was deemed unsuitable for field use, and it was disposed of. Although there were still XM148s in the armories of some security forces, the majority of them were abandoned.

There were two main types of grenades that were used with the XM-148: Thermobaric rounds, and Thermobaric HEAB rounds. Both were designed to explode above the target. While the HEAB rounds were the most popular, the Thermobaric grenades were more accurate. Several different designs were made in order to increase the grenade launching power.

Some other grenades that were used with the M203 were the XM-25. This weapon is similar to the XM-8 assault rifle, in that it has a lightweight polymer shell and an 8-round magazine. It has a sliding-stock design that sets the height above the target. It also has a recoil pad on the buttplate.
